We’ve got thoughts. This week’s #tellthetruths video takes on a podcast name that left us… raising an eyebrow. Is it clever? Is it confusing? Is it trying a little too hard to impress the word nerds?

Does This Name Suck? Not one bit!
TRANSCRIPT:
Hey guys, it’s Rebeca with BrandTrue, and today we’re going to get to do another Does This Name Suck video? We’re going to focus on a brand called Gimlet Media. So thank you to Janice Cave for suggesting that we take a look at this. Gimlet Media is a podcast network. And it’s one of those names where the word is vaguely familiar, but we might not know exactly where it comes from. It’s actually an old tool that’s used for poking holes. And then by metaphor, it’s used really only in one context in English anymore, which is like a piercing look is called a gimlet gaze, a gimlet stare, gimlet eyes, and then there’s a cocktail. That’s probably the way most people know it.
So what it means is pretty… not very accessible. Even word nerds don’t really know what gimlet means very well. So although you can guess that they named it that because of the sort of piercing, like looking into things with wisdom sort of thing. Eh, it’s not a terrible name. It doesn’t suck, but I don’t think it’s that great. Let me know what you think. Thanks. Bye!
