Let’s Talk About Naughty Brand Names Again!

TRANSCRIPT:

-Hello, Rebeca Arbona with BrandTrue, and I want to do a Does This Name Suck video on a brand called DURAMAX. You know I love a naughty brand name, and yes, that does sound like a condom brand name. But it isn’t. It’s actually something that my husband spotted. We were driving together, we were behind a giant, I mean massive Chevy pickup truck, and it said DURAMAX on the back. And we were like, “What the heck is that?” So I did some research, and it’s a kind of a diesel engine that’s made by GM and Isuzu, and it’s supposed to be more reliable. It has an excellent reputation for reliability. So, DURAMAX, reliability, okay? But it’s also a brand of motor oil, not made by the same people.

So if we, those things are relevant if we apply our framework. T, is it a Transparent communication? Well, if it’s supposed to be a powerful, “Max” and reliable, long-lasting, “Dura” kind of engine, then that’s a pretty good name for transparency. We’re gonna give them a check. For our Really Reals, plugging into something that’s true about the brand. I think so. I think you have to give it to them for the same reason that it was a transparent communication since they actually… it’s true that they’re reliable and durable. Unique, I think so. There’s nothing else I can think of that you might see written on the back of a truck that makes you think like this. So, I think it is pretty unique. And then, is it Engaging? Look, yes. I think it’s a good fit with the target audience of who is typically going to buy a pickup truck, and who’s going to want a big, powerful engine.

I think it appeals. I think it works. I think it’s a really great brand name, although I definitely found it surprising when I was stuck behind it in traffic. That’s what I think. Keep it clean, but let me know what you think. Thanks. Bye!
