Why am I wearing a mask in this week’s video? Because we have to acknowledge that the marketing messages we put out there play a role in shaping the culture.

There are a lot of reasons why too many people are resisting the wearing of masks. But one of them is that it doesn’t feel “normal” because it’s not what we’re used to seeing in pretty much any movies, television shows, or ads. Ever. And we have a burning need to fit in, even those of us that don’t like to admit it.

Do you have the opportunity to create content that normalizes the wearing of masks? A few companies have already tried it, notably Vistaprint and Uber, and some early research shows that consumers didn’t mind! Yeah, it’s not as good as seeing naked faces convey emotion. But if you have an opportunity to normalize something so important, won’t you please take it?
