Some names age like milk. Cheerios aged like… well, whole grain oats.

TRANSCRIPT:
Hey guys, it’s Rebeca with BrandTrue and we’re going to do another Does This Name Suck on a very classic brand, Cheerios. So, it’s interesting to do a brand that has this much heritage because we don’t even perceive it as a name. It’s just an entity. It’s a brand that’s always been there. But I still think it’s interesting to look at these because some brands don’t stand the test of time and some stay around forever. There’s lots of things that contribute to that, but I think the name is one of them.
So, this brand was launched as Cheerioats. back in 1941, but all the way ages ago, 1945, it was changed to Cheerios and I actually think it’s a really strong name. It’s of course a pun on the greeting, “Cheerio!”…more British than American, but still, people are familiar with it. And with the name change, it becomes more welcoming, more cute. The pun is more obvious and there’s a reference to the product shape, the “O” in it that I think is really reinforcing. I think it’s a really charming name and it does not suck! Let me know what you think. Thanks. Bye!
