As promised, this month we’ll be focusing on brand names that are made using a portmanteau construction, or two words being smooshed together. It’s a great strategy for finding fresh, trademarkable names that still carry a lot of relevant meaning.
It’s not October. It’s Portmanteau-ber!
Check out this #tellthetruths video to hear more about this strategy and some fun, tech examples.

Hey guys, it’s Rebeca with BrandTrue. And last month, I talked about how October would be Portmanteu-Ber, and here we are. And so all across, all the stuff that I put on LinkedIn, I’m going to talk about portmanteau names. So just as a refresher, a portmanteau is a word that’s made up of two different words. It’s the French word for suitcase. So it’s things like when we say cineplex, it’s a cinema complex. Or when we say, “Dude, chillax,” right, chill and relax.
So it’s a really powerful way to make brand names, and it’s really popular in the tech space. So in this video, I’m going to talk about a bunch of different tech examples, so you’ll just get a feel for it. Instagram, right? It’s sort of telegram-y, like you know, like that, but it’s instant. We’ve got Snapchat, Shopify, AutoTune, thank God for AutoTune, and Netflix.
This is just really common in this space, and I think it’s because of… they’re really leaning in to the power of a portmanteau name. It is made up, so it can be fresh and modern-sounding and also trademarkable. But when it’s a portmanteau name, although it’s made up, it’s also not without meaning. You get it. When I say Netflix, you know that it’s like kinda internet-y and it’s movies, right? It’s not like Kodak, that before you fill the vessel, there is no meaning.
So, anyway… think about portmanteau names. It’s not too late to send me examples if you have them. I love this and I just want to…it’s ridiculous, but I’m going to blow it out this month. Thanks. Bye!
