WHEN IT’S TIME FOR A CHANGE

Brands Can Change Course

TRANSCRIPT:

Hey guys, it’s Rebeca with BrandTrue, and I want to talk about the fact that the Boy Scouts of America have changed their name to Scouting America. Actually, I want to talk about the fact that there’s been a little bit of an out… a lot of an outcry about it, as well. I think that anything that gets changed these days tends to have a lot of backlash. Anything that’s changed in the name of inclusivity seems to get even more, which I think that’s a shame, but I think also this is an organization that’s about tradition. It’s about heritage. Even in a lot of families, there’s a family legacy of being part of scouting, and so names are so central to identity. I’m not surprised that this has blown up.

The background issue for those that don’t know is that the Boy Scouts, a couple of years ago, admitted girls. So you’ve got a naming problem already right there. And between that and other social changes, they decided to have a name that would be more inclusive to girls, more inclusive to children with different gender expression maybe don’t want to be called a boy or a girl, and so this is where people get upset. But I think, I’m willing to bet they knew it would be a problem, but they wanted to open the door, and so they made this change, anyway. I think that they really did a great job. I think that calling it Scouting America, it reflects what’s important, which is the activity of being in nature and being a good citizen, and also it is such an Americana kind of brand that having the name still very much in it, and in fact, I would argue more prominent in it than before, is great. They did a great job. They hit the nail on the head. They tied the knot. They deserve a patch. Great job!

Let me know what you think, unless you think that they shouldn’t have included girls or made themselves more inclusive. That’s not the debate I want to have. I want to have the debate about the name change and whether or not they picked something that works. Thanks. Bye!
